Hash &#38; Wild HorsesText and photos: Trans Himalayan Charas Smuggler
TransIation: Eriko Hosono
I am in Bombay. I am 18 years old.
A Hindu priest says to me, "Once a person sees the Himalayas, he will never be the same."

The Himalayas stand like razor blades splitting the heavens so they can spill unto the earth.
Gods stand shoulder to shoulder with wondering trantic yogis, sitting in meditation, sometimes with a chillum in their hands.

I am 25 years old. I am in a valley nestled between white edged tops. I roll another spliff. I tilt my head back and stare at the sky. Blue, a deep blue, like I have never witnessed before. I am at 4,200 meters, on a rock. I look around, then down. Bellow lies a valley, a 10 day walk, a winding snake, a river, which leads to the beginning of this journey. I see two men on horses. They are time travelers. "Wild Horses" starts playing in my head.

"Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands
Wild horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses couldn't drag me away"

I bought the charas, the dark black oily hash, from a school kid on my way up the mountain. After 3 days of walking, I had reached a town, 2,600 meters, marijuana plants on every side of the trail stretching to the mountains. The small kid had come up to me. His palms open, filled with pellets of hash that he had made on his way from school. 2 US dollars for 5 grams. I spent the 2$. Got a tea in town and rolled the first.

I then start the journey into the Higher altitudes of these mountains. The trail continues to wind. I continue to walk. The plants change colors to purple flowers, sometimes reaching 8 feet. They are strong, like trees. Occasionally, I walk off the trail and pick some plants to dry them on my pack. Other times, I simply rub the plants to get their oil on my hands and make my own charas. Making charas is a method of making hash in these mountains. It is a craft, an art of applying the right pressure on the plant as one rubs his hands around it. The charas here is world renowned for its intense and heavy high. But at this altitude i feel nothing but heavy and each smoke supplies me with an energy to keep walking. I do not feel the heaviness in my legs and the weight of my bag. The things I carried stay a step behind. Each village supplies me with more grass and hash than a battalion could smoke. It is a Battle. I am fighting the insanity below me and the only thing sane to do is to keep going up. The Higher I go, the crisper it gets. The air gets thinner, the sky bluer and the stars closer. Clouds appear close enough to reach up and grab. It gets colder and the crystals separate from the plants in the night. The heat of the sun dries them to a resin. The plants become darker, almost black. I am at a temple 4,800 meters high at the base of the river, the source of life. A sadhu, sits, Rudraksha beads around his neck, his dread locks covered. Crossed legged with a chillum in his hand, he yells to me "You smoke?" I sit by his side. I pass the chillum back and forth. I return to the beginning.

I am 16 years old. I am sitting outside my friends house in suburban America. I don't even know how to roll. That I have to remove the stems. My vision split open with a landscape periphery and everything is lighter. I am floating. I am happy.

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands
Wild Horses, couldn't drag me away
Wild wild horses couldn't drag me away

Tea TimeText: Cassia Carvalho
Photography: Gui Martinez
Location: Taiwan
TransIation: Saka Matsushita
Working with tea for quite a while now, I was asked to write a informal article about this fine beverage for JAGR. And to be honest it’s hard to figure out what is new, what is obvious and what is interesting for the general reader. I tried to keep a record of what our clients were most surprised about when we explained a little bit further about this millenary drink but there seems to be costumers that know from nothing to being an expertise.
So I hope I can accomplish something interesting on teas for you dear reader. To start with, I would like to mention the lack of vocabulary English language has to distinguish teas from herbal teas, it’s all called teas and that gives path to a little confusion.

Teas, whether they are black, white, green or red… they are all made from the same exact plant, the Camellia sinensis. It’s also true that it can come in different cultivars (the same way an Arabica coffee can be a Bourbon or a Caturra), but they are all the same species. Are we clear on that? Great! So that leaves all herbal teas, which are infusions made out of different plants (species) to a later issue of JAGR.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img589_820.jpg" width="820" height="550" width_o="820" height_o="550" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img589_o.jpg" data-mid="25279953"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
What differs from one tea to another, as well as the geographic location, cultivar, rainfall, harvesting and all the agricultural criteria, is their processing methods. It consists of a very similar set of methods but the outcome can vary significantly in taste, smell, appearance and nutritious properties. You can easily find, even in wikipedia, more information on what is involved in each procedure so I’m not going to detain myself in such details.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img762_820.jpg" width="820" height="664" width_o="820" height_o="664" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img762_o.jpg" data-mid="25279965"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
To make a long story short and the least complicated as possible, most tea processing involves:
Plucking: most picking up time is early morning before 10am
Wilting: the leaves loose humidity, become soft and ready for bruising
Bruising: when you bruise the leaves you break long chain from the leaf cells and natural oxidation begins
Oxidation: (also called fermentation) can either be full or partial depending on the tea, the leaves are naturally fermented in room temperature close to 17°C for around 2h
Fixation: it is done by baking, panning or steaming the leaves and it’s necessary to stop the fermentation at a precise desired moment
Shaping: normally rolling machines will do the job, apart from a few different teas like Lung Ching that has a special brush tool to flatten its leaves.
Drying: this is for most teas the final stage, it will make the tea ready for consuming or to be stored and stocked for sale.
Curing: this phase is only required for Pu-Erhs, Oolongs and Aged Teas. It is a post-fermentation for Pu-Erhs ,or a secondary baking for Oolongs to reach the client’s desired cup profile or by storage to obtain Aged Tea.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img634_820.jpg" width="820" height="545" width_o="820" height_o="545" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img634_o.jpg" data-mid="25279955"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img637_820.jpg" width="820" height="540" width_o="820" height_o="540" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img637_o.jpg" data-mid="25279957"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img665_820.jpg" width="820" height="544" width_o="820" height_o="544" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img665_o.jpg" data-mid="25279959"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Varying this process you can obtain teas ranging from:
White Tea &#38; Green Tea
You could also say they are ‘raw’ teas since their leaves barely undergo any kind of oxidation after plucking nor any firing after drying. The white tea is composed of the bud and first (and second sometimes) leaf of the brunch and that is why it normally costs much more than other tea varieties, it takes approximately a whole day for a picker to gather 2 kg.
You can tell white and green tea apart from the furry silver look you get from the white tea buds. They are both extremely antioxidants, excellent for dental care, they increase concentration and memory capacity and so on and so on…

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img508_820.jpg" width="820" height="550" width_o="820" height_o="550" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img508_o.jpg" data-mid="25279950"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Yellow Tea
It is very similar to green tea with a slight different detail during the processing that makes the final tea lack that ‘grassy’ taste typical of the green tea. After fixation the leaves are sweltered (heated in a humid environment – or suffocated you could say). It is gaining recognition little by little in the Western countries.
Oolong Tea (also called Blue Tea)
Oolong Tea is what you get between Green and Black tea. For that reason you can get semi-oxidized closer to Green, closer to Black and somewhere in between. In Taiwan we found out a specific type of Oolong called Oriental Beauty, entirely harvested in the summer months when a tiny grasshopper feast on the emerging buds and secret an enzyme that stops the leaf from growing. This little insect is responsible for Oriental Beauty’ unique perfume, an incredible sweet flavour, silky smoothness of a golden fragrant liquid. You must try it before you die!

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img672_820.jpg" width="820" height="606" width_o="820" height_o="606" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img672_o.jpg" data-mid="25279963"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Black Tea
It’s the most commonly known worldwide tea. I may say that some people think that Black Tea is the only beverage named Tea. I have often been to simple cafeterias/restaurants and dared to ask what sort of tea they had to offer and all I got for an answer was “Tea” (endpoint). Now I know that all the time that there is only one type of tea (in western countries), that is most probably Black.
So Black Tea is the 100% oxidized tea. They have double the caffeine from green tea since they’re much more concentrated and they are less antioxidant since they’ve been oxidized, it’s a simple math.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img779_820.jpg" width="820" height="1043" width_o="820" height_o="1043" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img779_o.jpg" data-mid="25279970"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Pu-Erh (also called Red Tea)
This post-fermented tea is named after a small Chinese county in the Yunnan province (well known for good quality tea). Pu-Erh follows the same procedure as Green tea with a microbial fermentation after the drying stage. This can be done either by natural aging – dry storage - (some can be as old as 30 years old) or by wet storage – adding water to speed up the aging (lower quality).
They have an earthy camphor like taste, a heavy body and are well know for devouring fat, so if you need a hand on loosing weight this is your tea, just don’t forget to quit junk food and exercise yourself, Pu-erh is no miracle tea after all .
One other word for the misinterpretations on Pu-Erh versus Red Tea. The South African Rooibos redbush (Herbal Tea) is also known as Red Tea in some Anglo Saxon speaking countries, so we might as well say Pu-Erh when we refer to Pu-Erh and Rooibos when we refer to Rooibos and quit Red Tea misinterpretations.
Aged Tea
Aging is a not so common method to change the tea’s character, aroma and taste. Pu-Erhs can be considerate aged tea, but they are placed under its own known category. It can be done with pretty much any kind of tea and the result is a unique smooth, dense and mellow cup.
In Taiwan for instance, they use organic high mountain grown Oolongs and keep them stored in specific condition in earth ware pots (so they can breath) for 3, 5, 10 or even 15 years. It is a relatively new thing in the market, specially because there is almost no one registering the dates they are processed and stored so no official label can be tagged into those special teas.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img492_820.jpg" width="820" height="537" width_o="820" height_o="537" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img492_o.jpg" data-mid="25279944"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
Final considerations:
Oh man, there is so much to talk about tea, it feels like I’ve said nothing so far, this are just the basics, perhaps I’ll write another article on less trivial tea facts now that you’ve become a tea connoisseur.
In late august we travelled to an amazing tea expedition in Taiwan to visit chiefly the oolong gardens and factories. We are now compiling the data there collect to present it online and share it with all tea curious worldwide.
If you want to know more about tea, there’s two main important things to do, first one is to drink as much different tea as possible and second one is to read as much as possible about them. Not very different from all other things you would like to know more about in this life.

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img649_820.jpg" width="820" height="541" width_o="820" height_o="541" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img649_o.jpg" data-mid="25279958"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img670_820.jpg" width="820" height="546" width_o="820" height_o="546" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img670_o.jpg" data-mid="25279962"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img412_820.jpg" width="820" height="547" width_o="820" height_o="547" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img412_o.jpg" data-mid="25279941"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img514_820.jpg" width="820" height="560" width_o="820" height_o="560" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img514_o.jpg" data-mid="25279952"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img775_820.jpg" width="820" height="647" width_o="820" height_o="647" src_o="http://payload117.cargocollective.com/1/2/71453/4657545/img775_o.jpg" data-mid="25279968"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Sitting across a small, subdued Japanese man serious in demeanor and kind in his gestures I thought, “how did this man end up working in a used underwear shop in a busy corner in Shibuya?” And, more importantly “how the hell did I end up negotiating with him!?”
This, and other wack scenarios seem somehow, not bizarre, and even commonplace in the craziness that is Tokyo.

The hurricane of emotions is a constant in this city- 2 hours into my arrival in Japan I found myself crying non-stop. How in hell’s name and I going to live here for 2 SOLID MONTHS when I hate it already?
The shock of the sensory overload of Tokyo hits you like a slap in the face and a punch in the guts, all at once, and I hated it… For a full 24 hours.
After that, I was in love…. and I blame the tiles, the mad tiles that are plastered in every building that woke me up to the reality of the city, and not my delusion of what it would be.
What do tiles have to do with anything? The truth is, when I got to Tokyo I had the idea of a brand new sparkling space-age beehive, and what I got instead was a real life Blade Runner. Initially shocked by it’s awkward almost retro-modernism, I was upset, but then I realized I WAS IN A REAL LIFE BLADE RUNNER.

Living in a small hotel in Shibuya, the love hotel district was fun, but being the one female photographer, among a crew of male models, all strangers in a strange land, seemed like a reality tv-show on acid.
…And it was. Some amateur, others professionals, we were all photographing, painting, drawing and filming our day to day in this madhouse, that and we were also all on acid.

One of my favorite things of being in Japan is being forced to embrace, and come to love, not understanding anything.
This blessing in disguise opens up a whole other dimension of perception and communication; paying close attention to gestures and their gesticulations are key, and fundamental things like looking deep into stranger’s eyes become essential to survival.
Aside from not speaking the language (and a surprising minority speaking English) the streets REALLY have no names, so your visual memory and following your gut are the basically only way to get around. You choose your food off sight and smell and find yourself picking everything from train tickets to drinks by just pointing at them.
Visual contamination like advertising becomes beautiful, because lack of understanding deconstructs signage into wonderful works of art that blink and buzz in vibrant colors-to foreign eyes; the whole city is a moving digital painting.

Then there are my personal favorites-an individual-diner Udon restaurant in Shibuya where you sit in a seat off a long communal bar, separated from your neighbor by a retractable wall where you order food through a vending machine (as is the case with many other wonderful things, like warm coffee in a can, and yes, also underwear).
Another of my favorites are the toilettes, the wonderful beautiful, fun friendly toilettes which make noises to cover up other less welcome noises, that flash their disco lights in the whole rainbow gamma, and spritz you front to back with such ease they make you want to take them home.
Then there are peculiarities, which could only fit in Japan, like their painful attachment to the rules, which is strikingly evident as theirs soft faces go stiff in shock when a foreigner crosses the road on a red light, even if there are no cars.
And the Shibuya girls! They are in my top five Tokyo attractions no doubt. Clad from head to toe in Paris Hilton’s clothing line, they look like Britney in her coming out video “Oops I did it Again”, complete with her knee high socks and furry pom-pom pigtails. But their key selling point is their shoes… These girls all wear high-heeled shoes 1 or 2 sizes too big for them, and drag them around the city in a manner that is impossible do imitate and almost as difficult to describe- they tuck one of the tips of their shoes inwards, and the remaining foot schleps along in submission- truly a travelers delight and an absolute sight for sore eyes.

Every day is different in Japan and much like a true urban jungle, Tokyo’s constant flux, change and diversity makes it’s nature all the more rich; and being a euro-latin blonde girl in a sea of black haired Asians indisputably makes you the peculiar foreign species.

And luckily young, western artists are the foreign species that is as welcome and cool in Japanese eyes as Lady Gaga herself, and gives another meaning to the phrase “famous in Japan.”

For those lucky enough to travel there and delve into the wonderful country that is Japan, and more specifically Tokyo, I say go for it. Jumping head first into the culture clash and the sensory overdrive that is this awe-inspiring city is life changing, it inspires you in ways you never thought possible and it opens ups sides of you, you never knew existed…
Tokyo Tower-a 332 meter C-3PO, Shinjuku-perfectly captured by Gaspar Noe in it’s DMT color blast, Takashita street (yes, takeshit st)- St. Marx in Japan, Hachiko still patiently waiting for his master off Shibuya’s train station, Ebisu’s canals and delicate Cherry trees, and so so much more;
Tokyo is the urban soul’s heaven, and you don’t have to die to get there...But when you do you are reborn.

		<description>SORCERER The Sorcerer recently washed ashore from his musical chamber deep below
the ocean surface. He fuses magical melodies with electronics entangled in
seaweed. The Sorcerer creates slow burning grooves using his guitar, drum
machine grooves, synthesizers, and fragments of sampled sound. Influenced by
surf music, 80s dance pop, space jazz, 70s germany, disco, dub, and african cassettes,
his music is a representation of a California lifestyle.
He is currently a member of the live dance group SHOCK who recently had a 12", Heaven, come out in October on Voltaire records, with remixes from Steve Moore, Hatchback and The Beat Broker.
He has released music under the name Windsurf with his pal Hatchback.

This mix is a tie-in with his 12" release Island Rescue on the new Diskotopia sublabel A Kind Of Presence
coming out in January, featuring remixes from Greeen Linez and Myakkah.
